Original Painting Medium: Pastel
Scientific Name: Mandrillus sphinx
Region: Equatorial Africa

My most recent pastel portrait on a black background. To portray the colourful facial features of the largest primate of the Old World monkey family, was intriguing and fun. Black backgrounds offer a different approach artwork-wise and I was excited by the distinctive and contrasting blue and red skin of this handsome male Mandrill.

Even though mandrills can appear quite intimidating when bearing their incredibly long, sharp canine teeth, they often only do this as a friendly gesture. They are herbivores and their diet consists of fruit, fungi, roots, sometimes small vertebrates, and lizards. The rainforests of equatorial Africa are their home.
