Scientific Name: Equus zebra zebra

This is my most recent artwork, a Cape Mountain Zebra, the smallest of the zebra species. Black backgrounds offer a different approach artwork-wise, and I was excited by the idea of contrast in colour and linear shapes of this handsome zebra. My artwork is a pastel painting.
The Cape Mountain Zebra is endemic to South Africa and is a subspecies of the Mountain Zebra (Equus zebra). Once abundant throughout the Eastern and Western Cape, the Cape Mountain Zebra declined drastically due to hunting and loss of habitat. The species faced extinction as numbers declined drastically to less than 60 individuals at the beginning of the 20th century, but thanks to conservation efforts, an estimated 5,000 zebra now live in South Africa. Even though numbers have risen, it is still IUCN listed as Vulnerable. As its name applies, the Cape Mountain Zebra can be found on the slopes and plateaus of mountainous regions where it is a highly selective feeder, feeding only on green, leafy plants.
