This portrait of a Newfoundland puppy,  ‘Grampus’ is one of my earlier pencil sketches and was drawn a few years before I became a full-time Pet Portrait Artist.

Newfoundland dogs are gentle, patient, faithful companions and make great family pets. They are renowned for their outstanding temperament and are said to be one of the friendliest breeds.

When I was younger I hoped that one day I would have such a companion and during the early 1980s contacted various rescue groups. After many months I finally received the news that I had been waiting for.  Orca, a Newfoundland girl, became a very special and well-loved member of our family. Orca was a beautiful dog a super companion and my best buddy. I feel extremely lucky as we had fifteen very happy years together.

Unbeknownst to me, Orca was pregnant when I collected her, and Grampus was one of the eight puppies she gave birth to. Grampus lived a happy and healthy life in the New Forest with our good, and dog-loving friends.

Newfoundland dogs are excellent swimmers and over the centuries they have rescued hundreds of people from the sea. Many heroic stories and poems have been written about this lovely breed.
