Birute Galdikas, the founder of the Orangutan Foundation, has worked for the past 30 years in the tropical rain forest in Kalimantan, (Indonesian Borneo). She has dedicated her life to studying, conserving and protecting orangutans, known locally as 'men of the forest'; plus protecting their environment.
This baby orangutan was photographed at the rescue centre in Borneo by the photographer, David Barker. David kindly donated the photograph to the Orangutan Foundation and as soon as I saw the photograph, I knew I wanted to portray this lovely little face.
I am a keen conservationist and have supported a wide range of conservation groups for many years; including the Orangutan Foundation. In November 2003, Birute Galdikas, the founder of the Orangutan Foundation, was giving a seminar at the Zoological Society in London. Having admired Birute and followed her work for many years, I eagerly booked my tickets for the event and was absolutely delighted and honoured when, a week later, I was contacted by the Orangutan Foundation and asked if my 'Baby Orangutan' drawing could be used for the Guest Invitations for event.
A couple of weeks later I was delighted all over again when the Orangutan Foundation invited me to display and sell my Artwork, Fine Art Prints and Greetings Cards at the seminar. I couldn't believe it!!! The following weeks were extremely busy, but it was all worth while.
It was a fantastic evening and included speakers: Ian Redmond and Sir Terry Pratchett. I met some super people and sold many 'Baby Orang' Fine Art Prints and Greetings Cards. To be supporting Birute at the Zoological Society in London, at an Orangutan Foundation event - was a dream come true!
After the seminar Birute asked me if she could purchase my 'Baby Orangutan' fine art print. I couldn't believe that I was actually speaking with the lady that I had admired and supported for so many years. I gave her my 'Baby Orangutan' print and she then asked if I would also write a personal message on the print for her. Whilst chatting, she explained that she recognised the baby as one she had cared for at Camp Leakey in Borneo....I was overjoyed!
To have met Birute Galdikas; my hero for so many years was a delight. For this lovely, gentle lady to also like and recognise my artwork; I was on cloud nine!
Thank you to Ashley, Lisa, Martha and everyone at the Orangutan Foundation for a great evening and Thank You Birute, for All that you do and have done, for the Orangutans.
The Orangutan Foundation is an organisation dedicated to the conservation of orangutans and their habitat. Money is needed to fund local education programmes and to help protect the orangutans' natural habitat - the tropical rainforests. Years of illegal tree felling and the destruction of the remaining forests, are just a few of the many factors threatening the future survival of this magnificent species. Donations are needed in order to help protect the remaining populations of orangutan; to help care for and rehabilitate captive and orphaned orangs, such as this little chap.
From childhood, drawing in pencil has always been a pleasure. To study and draw this young orangutans expressive and beautiful little face was an even greater pleasure. With the purchase of each 'Baby Orangutan' artwork a donation is made to the Orangutan Foundation.. As with all primate species, their future depends on our actions now. The Original pencil drawing plus 'Baby Orangutan' Fine Art Prints and 'Baby Orangutan' Miniature Fine Art Print Greetings Cards are also available from my Gallery Shop.
From sales of my 'Baby Orangutan' artwork a donation is given to The Orangutan Foundation.
