I received an email asking if I would portray an African endangered species, for the 'Explorers Against Extinction' auction, to be held at the Royal Geographical Society, in October 2017. All funds raised to help protect rhinos, elephants, lions and combat wildlife crime in Africa.
I've been supporting a number of wildlife groups for 30+ years and one of these groups is Rhinos Without Borders. I knew immediately which species I wanted to portray for the auction.. and couldn't wait to get started on my new artwork.
I am also a Signature Member of Artists for Conservation, and I couldn't believe it when a week later I received another email asking if I would donate an artwork for the 27th Int. Ornithological Congress in Vancouver, Canada. The focus: to highlight all 678 endangered species of birds of the world, in a large mural comprising individually created paintings. I couldn't think of a better way of getting back into my little studio and my world of art and conservation.
So, I have since been beavering away to finish my artwork, 'Out of the Shadows - White Rhino', and she was duly uploaded to the Explorers Against Extinction website.
At the beginning of the 20th century there were estimated to be 500,000 rhinos across Africa and Asia. At the end of 2015, there were around only 29,000 rhinos (all five species) surviving in the wild. In South Africa, every 7 hours a rhino dies. Poachers kill on average 3 rhinos per day – and 1 elephant every 15 minutes, to feed the demand for horn and ivory, on the black market. Our rhinos and ele's need all the help they can get, so hopefully the project will be a huge success.
The grand sum of £250 was raised by my artwork and has been donated to combat wildlife crime in Africa. 'Out of the Shadows' is now on display at Larmer Tree Studio. If you would like to purchase or wish to receive further information please contact me.
