-------------------------- Susan Shimeld When I was younger I hoped that one day I would also have such a companion and during the early 1980's contacted various rescue groups. After many months I finally received the news that I had been waiting for and Orca, a Newfoundland girl,
became a very special and well loved member of our family. Orca was a beautiful dog with a gentle and understanding nature. She was a super companion and my bestest buddy. I feel extremely lucky as we had fifteen very happy years together. Newfoundland dogs love water and are instinctive water-rescue dogs. They are excellent swimmers and many owe their lives to this breed. In 1919, a gold medal was awarded to a Newfoundland that pulled to safety a lifeboat with twenty shipwrecked people on board. As they have a natural life-saving instinct, many heroic stories and poems have been written about this lovely breed.
