Tollard Royal
At the heart of Cranborne Chase is the pretty village of Tollard Royal, surrounded by superb countryside with stunning views. A mile away from the village is the Larmer Tree Gardens which owe its existence to General Pitt Rivers.

In 1880, the General inherited Rushmore Estate in Tollard Royal. He proceeded to lay out the pleasure gardens 'for the recreation of the public in the neighbouring towns and villages'. The gardens contain a number of interesting Nepalese buildings with intricate, carved wooden features. The grounds also include an open air theatre, classical temple and a beautiful sunken garden.

A keen archaeologist, General Pitt Rivers had already established himself as a leading exponent of excavation methods when he inherited the Rushmore Estate. Cranborne Chase contains a large number of ancient monuments and he devoted much of his last twenty years in examining these earthworks. It is possible to see many of the artifacts that General Pitt Rivers discovered on display, at the Salisbury and Wiltshire Museum.

Rushmore Estate

Rushmore is contained within the Cranborne Chase an ancient deer forest where King John came to hunt and within which the "Chase Rights" applied from the Saxon period until 1828. This is a truly unique area in terms of historical landscape with a rich archaeological heritage and diversity of flora and fauna. Today, the Estate is involved in a variety of activities including farming, forestry, conservation, leisure and sporting pursuits. www.rushmore-estate.co.uk
